INFO:
We’ve got awesome feedback, amazing quotes for Future Sounds Of Kraut Vol. 1, very good sales, too, so here is Vol. 2:
17 modern krauty electronic tracks (9 of them exclusive) inspired by Kraftwerk, Can, Neu!, Cluster, Harmonia, Klaus Schulze and many others. Curated and compiled by Compost artist Fred und Luna. The collage on the cover – like on Vol.1 – was exclusively made by the fantastic artist Norika Nienstedt from Kraut metropolis Düsseldorf.
Future sounds of Kraut, what’s it all about? Maybe Volume 2 will bring it to light for you…
It’s not easy at all or even impossible to define the musical genre “Kraut”. Nevertheless, Compost Records and Fred und Luna strike out on the path to find the diverse elements of German electronic music of the 1970s and 1980s and their effects on the new German and international music scene.
After the immense success of Volume 1 a follow-up volume was soon started, tying in stylistically with its predecessor and furthermore ‒ as this is one basic principle of the series ‒ expanding the musical spectrum by adding new krauty elements step by step. So now, besides stylistic followings to Volume 1, you will hear some more club oriented and experimental tracks. Feel free to listen and get krautified!
About the artists:
Fred und Luna
Fred und Luna, the curators of this compilation, live in a long-established fashion house in Karlsruhe/Germany. The two plastic mannequins are the muses of musician, author and photo/film maker Rainer Buchmüller, who calls his music either Elektrokraut or Krautelektro. “Monotonikum”, with its Detroit-styled Autobahn night drive feeling, was originally released on Optimo Music in 2016 and edited for this compilation.
Sankt Otten
Sankt Otten live in the German city of Osnabrück. The duo, represented by Stephan Otten and Oliver Klemm, has been producing electronic instrumental music since 1999 and cites the Berlin School, Krautrock, Ambient and Trip-Hop as their major influences. They were musically supported by Kraut legends Jaki Liebezeit, Harald Großkopf and Ulrich Schnauss. „Angekommen in der letzten Reihe“ is a perfect combination of old and modern and a wonderful example of Sankt Otten’s preference for unusual and funny song titles.
Ghost Power
Ghost Power are Timothy Gane (Stereolab, Cavern of Anti-Matter and Turn On) and Jeremy Novak (Dymaxion). “Vertical Section”, with its avant-krauty freshness, was recorded remotely in Berlin and New York, the hometowns of Gane and Novak and originally released in 2022 on Duophonic Super 45s.

formAnt B
About a decade ago Frank Husemann (guitar, synths, organ) and Sunny Vollherbst (synths, organ, drums, step sequencers), owners of famous Synthesizer Studio Hamburg, have formed the Electro/Kraut project formAnt B. The krautophonic “Kater” was originally released on their album “Tiere” in 2014 and edited especially for this compilation.
Thomas Fehlmann
Suisse-born composer and music producer Thomas Fehlmann is known for being part of 1980s’ avantgarde band Palais Schaumburg, collaborations with The Orb, Inga Humpe, Juan Atkins, Blake Baxter and Gudrun Gut and DJing at Tresor/Berlin. Thomas has always been keeping pace with the times. “Permanent Touch” (released in 2010 on Kompakt) carries us off to krautesque dancefloor fields, shining with beautiful harmonies and a breathtaking atmosphere.
Roman Flügel
The well-known German producer, DJ and live act is an active member of the international electronic music scene since the early 1990s, exploring many different styles like Electro, House, Techno, Ambient/IDM. Kraut and Leftfield Music. Listening to “Rules”, released in 2022, feels, as Roman describes it, like brushing your teeth after an extended feast. One krautospheric and at the same time playful musical piece for special dancefloor hours.

Sordid Sound System
Stuart Evans, aka Sordid Sound System, is one of the founders of the Glaswegian “Green Door Studio”, a not for profit recording facility with full analogue capability alongside high end digital recording. Evans now resides in Northern California where he continues to produce as Sordid Sound System and where he has built another studio: Green Door West. “It’s About Time” with its tribal Can-influenced drive was released on Invisible, Inc. in 2019.
I:Cube
Nicolas Chaix aka I:Cube is one of the most famous French DJs and electronic music producers of the past decades. Paris based, he first gained limelight on Paris‘ underground dance scene in the 1990s. „Basso“ was especially composed and recorded for this compilation and gives an impression of Nicolas’ idea of a futuristic, repetitive Kraut song with a French touch.
Lucas Croon
Lucas Croon works as a DJ, producer and composer and is known to many as a band member of Stabil Elite and BAR. As a resident DJ at the Salon des Amateurs and after more than ten years in the business, he is part of the new generation of the Düsseldorf School. “Krautwickel” is an homage to the grandfathers of the Düsseldorf school with an extremely modern and individual feel and was exclusively written and recorded for this compilation.
Minami Deutsch
Minami Deutsch, formed in 2014, currently are Kyotaro Miula, Keita Ise, Kosei Terunuma and Taku Idemoto from Tokyo. All band members are self-professed “repetition freaks” who heavily listen to minimal techno. And, as to be heard on “Your Pulse”, to pulsating, Düsseldorfish Krautmotor Sound. This breathless track was released in 2022 on their third album “Fortune Goodies”.
Gilgamesh Mata Hari Duo
Gilgamesh Mata Hari Duo is not, as the name suggests, a band consisting of two people, but the one-man project of Hamburg-based musician Jan Stuhlmann. Since 2012 Stuhlmann’s music symbolizes, as he describes it, „nostalgic, sentimental and utopian visions of the future“. The krautronic track „Johan“ was composed especially for this compilation.
Kosmischer Läufer
In East Germany, way back in the early 1970s, Martin Zeichnete (Kosmischer Läufer) worked as a sound editor for DEFA (Deutsche Film AG). Like many young East Germans of the time he would listen furtively to West German radio at night and became infatuated with Kosmische Musik and Krautrock. “Spargelspiegel” was written back in 1982. Hitherto unreleased it was one of the songs Martin recorded for himself when he had some free time in the studio. He was planning to use it as part of his ‘Jahre der ruhigen Sonne” project but it fell by the wayside. Luckily it is now available exclusively on this compilation.
Young Solo
A solo project of the Frankfurt am Main based musician and DJ Joerg Schmidt. Since 2012 he is part of the band “Newmen”, who have released several albums and EPs, mostly of electronic Krautpop nature. Their releases feature collaborations with ex-Kraftwerk drummer Wolfgang Flür as well as remixes by “Die Wilde Jagd”, “Tolouse Low Trax” and Gerd Janson. The dreamy “Twin Shadow” with its beautiful minimalkrauty main melody is one of the exclusively released tracks of this album.
Schlammpeitziger
Schlammpeitziger is the alias of musician, illustrator and performance artist Jo Zimmermann. He has been an integral figure in the evolving sound of Cologne since 1992, releasing his surrealistic lo-fi krautronica on imprints such as A-Musik, Pingipung, Sonig and Bureau B. The miraculous “Runzreich” is the most experimental and far out track on this album and was written and recorded especially for the Future Sounds Of Kraut series.
Halwa
It still has to be clarified whether Halwa were named after the well-known Lenten food or after a song title by Cluster. Anyway, after hearing „Schmetterling“, it becomes clear where the musical roots of the young Hamburg project around Christoph Eix and André Willing can be found. The two have always been fascinated by the Krautrock sound of the 1970s and by downtempo music, so they decided to pay homage to their favorite music and let it shine in a new guise. „Schmetterling“ is their second ever released song. A debut album is in the making.

Musik muß frei sein.“ – Dr. Motte
